生物质 energy is a suggested replacement for fossil fuel combustion 和 is produced木质颗粒着火 by 燃烧 sustainable biomass materials such as wood 和 agricultural residues. An aggressively growing industry, biomass encompasses many combinations 生产的 和 storage, all with potentially 危险相互作用。 Biomass generally includes forest, sawmill 和 agricultural residue. When processed into pellets, 的 moisture content is lowered 和 biomass is rendered logistically 和 economically suitable for transportation 和 for use as fuel in power generation 和 steam production plants. Biomass is an attractive fuel because 的 燃烧生物质排放的二氧化碳不会增加总量 大气二氧化碳,如果以可持续的方式进行。 For this reason, many European utilities 和 private consumers are considering 的 change from coal-based power to biomass fueled-plants.

In 的 US, different organizations have different responses to 的 biomass industry. Appropriately scaled wood energy facilities also support our efforts to remove hazardous fuels 和 reduce 的 risks of catastrophic wildfires."

In Europe, The Climate 和 Energy Package is driving consumers 和 utilities to use more sustainable fuels (the 20,20,20 Targets). In 的 UK, new solid 生物量可持续性标准 are set to go into effect in 2015. Once 的 standards take effect, 的 biomass industry will be required to show its fuel is sustainable to receive financial support, per 的 UK Department of Energy & Climate Change.
